I need to choose two European paintings: one from the Medieval/Middle-ages-time period and one from the Renaissance and how they reflect their time periods.

I went around on wiki, but I’m not sure which would be the most famous/important/meaningful works of art. I would really appreciate some painting ideas. Thanks! =)

    Renaissance….Titian, da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo – choose any work of art from these and you are there, they all created work that propelled the arts from the middle ages. As for Medieval, for me, it would have to be The Book of Kells. Lara

    If I was you Id would pick something religious from the middle ages, this is the subject that defined art around this time. God was a much larger part of peoples lives. Alter boards are often great examples of this. Ive just picked a random fresco Its The last Judgement by Pietro Cavallini but any alter work I think would suffice.

    Now you have options here you can decide to go for a religious comparison or a non religious one from the Renaissance era. Of course the church was still very important during this time but It was treated very differently by the great artists of the day.

    My religious option is (of course :p) the alter wall of sistine chapel The Last Judgement by Michelangelo. This is a good one to compare because although both depict the same scene the differences in technique, composition, content and (of course again) perspective. (The nudity for example NB many of the fig leaves etc were added later)
    )

    My non christian option The Venus of Urbino by Titan. Not only do you get nudity, perspective and one of the best examples of Secular art of the era but you get some architecture in the painting as well, Renaissance architecture XD. Alec B

    School of athens – awesome and influential painting from the renaissance. One of my favorites. (raphael painting)
    Creation of Adam – A popular painting (scene from the sistine chapel by michelangelo)

    manuscript illumination was a very key part of medieval art.. check out the limburg brothers.
    sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Andrew
