Marge: I bet Thomas Edison didn't talk about Thomas Edison all day.
Homer: Oh, that's not true Marge. He was a shameless self-promoter!

Edison was very aggressive with his marketing. Although he did make some original inventions he was very quick to exaggerate his own role in many inventions. He often took credit for work done by his lab assistants for example. In his day the phonograph and the stock ticker where the major inventions that help Edison make his name.

Me isn't quite right about the light bulb, but is somewhat closer to the truth than many of the other answers. What Edison did was he purchased the patent of two Canadians, Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans, and worked to improve their design. The two Canadians lacked the financial backing of Edison and were forced to sell their patent to Edison. Meanwhile in England, Joseph Swan created a light bulb very similar to the bulb that Edison would eventually produce. Swan didn't actually patent his design at first but instead published it in the journal Scientific America (of course Edison would never read a journal like that, would he?). Swan did eventually get around get around to patenting his light bulb after better vacuum pumps got him reignited his interest in the device. Swan's patent actually pre-dates that held by Edison. At first they made a gentleman's agreement that which effectively gave Edison the benefit of the doubt. However, Edison's later blaze of self-promotion regarding the light bulb aggravated Swan who subsequently sued him and won. Edison work regarding the light bulb has much more to do with developing it and making it last longer, though again credit has to be given to his lab assistants, particularly the physicist Francis Upton. Edison also benefited from having the whole electrical infrastructure to make a commercial success of the lightbulb

In addition to the names mentioned there are plenty of others who worked along the same principle of a filament heated in a vacuum. The next key development in the light bulb, the move from a carbon to a metal filament, eluded Edison. Tim W
